About this book:

This book explores the wide range of stimulating research possibilities Whitehead's process approach has to offer for different disciplines of thought: philosophy, physics, chemistry, biology and neuroscience, chemistry, psychology, education, technology, ethics and feminism as well as theology.

It will be demonstrated that with the use of Whitehead's relational process approach to reality long standing problems concerning contradictory aims caused by intellectual bifurcations are creatively transformed and - sometimes surprising - new solutions can be elaborated. In different fields of research this book is offering arguments for a fundamental paradigm shift.

In a period of major changes and growing complexity of problems in all fields of life which increasingly require interdisciplinary handling Whitehead's relational process approach gives substantiated hope for finding new pathways into a more human future. The papers of this book were presented at the 6th International Whitehead Conference 2006, Salzburg, by Talis Bachmann, Jason W. Brown, Reginald Cahill, Carol Christ, Ronald Desmet, Joseph Earley, Gernot Falkner, Frederick Ferré, Kurt W. Fischer, Arran Gare, Rom Harré, Cathrine Keller, Ervin Laszlo, Franz Riffert, Hans-Joachim Sander, George Shields, Gudmund Smith, Isabelle Stengers.

Conference Announcement: "The Philosophical Basis of Inter-religious Dialogue - Katowice, Poland, May 2008

The Whitehead Metaphysical Society Franciscan Seminary OFM in Katowice, The Pontifical Academy of Theology in Cracow and Institute of Philosophy, University of Silesia in Katowice

are honoured to invite to international scientific conference

THE  PHILOSOPHICAL  BASIS OF INTER-RELIGIOUS  DIALOGUE

9 – 10th May 2008
in Franciscan Seminary OFM, Katowice, ul. Panewnicka 76, Poland

In the present epoch of tensions between civilisations, challenges being brought by globalisation processes and the necessity of the coexistence of various cultures and traditions, the subject of the conference seems to be particularly significant. Can religions remain isolated islands? Are their claims of being the only source of theological truth justified or should it rather be understood as an effect of interaction between different points of view and common effort of looking for the answers to the questions about God and his relations to the world? What is the role of dialogue? Is it only a politically correct element or maybe something more essential – the basis of reasonable existence and development of religion? Should the direction traced by 20th century's partisans of ecumenical movements be widened in order to embrace also non – Christian religions? What is the orthodoxy and where are its boundaries?
These are some suggested topics that we would like to discuss. The process philosophy creates a convenient and favourable atmosphere for this kind of considerations. All interested in participating in conference are kindly required to send topics of lectures and short abstracts on:

Murray Code, "Process, Reality, and the Power of Symbols: Thinking with A.N. Whitehead"

Description
MurrayCodeBook2.jpgFollowing A.N. Whitehead, this book takes up the principal challenge facing a natural philosopher who wishes to engage with Nature while rescuing both Life and Thought from materialistic approaches which rob them of their 'quicknesses'. Selecting certain insights and intuitions from the writings of Peirce, Coleridge, Deleuze and Nietzsche, the author proffers a remedy for the pervasive nihilism of 'the moderns' which illustrates Deleuze's suggestion that philosophy should be imaged as a dynamic collage that is forever in the making.

Author Biography
MURRAY CODE who taught mathematics at the University of Guelph, Canada, has argued for the importance of A. N. Whitehead's views on logic, mathematics, philosophy of science, and metaphysics in two previous books: Order and Organism: Steps to a Whiteheadian Philosophy of Mathematics and the Natural Sciences (1985); and Myths of Reason: Vagueness, Rationality, and the Lure of Logic (1995).

Table of contents
Science and the Appropriation of Reality * Signs, Symbols and Metaphysical Imaginaries * Minding, Imaging and Symbolizing * A Nearly Comprehensive Naturalism * In Search of a 'True Naturalism' * Putting Life Back into Nature * On Learning Good Sense * Against 'Conceptual Idolatry' * Epilogue: Notes for a Cultural Therapy
