Young Process Scholar – International Essay Contest
First Call for Papers
The International Process Network (IPN), a tax-exempt, non-profit scholarly institution, among other things tries to promote philosophic, scientific, and religious studies in the spirit of Alfred North Whitehead’s process metaphysics.
In order to do so IPN places the “first call for papers” for the “Young Process Scholar – International Essay Contest”.
AWARDS
Two prizes of $1,000 each will be awarded for the best essays (in English) on the emergence of Process Thought in twentieth century philosophy. Young scholars in particular are encouraged to send in papers on the following
topics:
- Process Philosophy,
- Process Philosophy and its relationship to other philosophic disciplines (including Ethics),
- Process Philosophy and its relationship to the Sciences (Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Psychology),
- Process Philosophy and its relationship to Social Sciences (including Education, Economics, Government),
- Process Philosophy and its relationship to Cultural Studies (including Religious Studies and Humanities).
Decisions will be rendered by separate panels of scholars. Funding (up to $500) also will be provided for the winners to travel to the 7th International Whitehead Conference to be held on January 5-9, 2009, in Bangalore, India.
Granting of the financial awards ($1,000 prize and $500 travel support) is dependent upon the contest winners attending and presenting the winning essays at the International Whitehead Conference in Bangalore, India.
The winning paper has to be presented in one of the sections of this conference and will also be published in the online journal Concrescence – The Australasian Journal of Process Thought.
ELIGIBILITY
The contest is open to young scholars beginning their careers, such as graduate students or assistant professors, as well as independent scholars of comparable standing. The prize winners are strongly encouraged to attend the 7th International Whitehead Conference to be held on January 5-9, 2009, in Bangalore, India.
SUBMISSIONS
An electronic copy of the essay, typed double-spaced in 12 point font (Times Roman), in word and pdf format should be sent as attachments by email directly to the coordinator of the essay contest committee:

Please add “Whitehead Essay Contest” in the subject line of the email.
Previously published papers are not acceptable. Submissions should not exceed 5000 words or 20 A4 pages (excluding notes and bibliography).
Please note:
The paper itself should not include any reference to the author (name, addresss).
But please do provide these this details in the email!
JUDGING CRITERIA
The purpose of the contest is to encourage young scholars who show promise
of making important contributions to the Field of Process Thought and its
relationship to the Sciences and Cultural Studies (including Studies in the
Fields of Religion and the Humanities). Submissions will be evaluated on the
following criteria:
- CREATIVITY : original philosophical and scientific insights;
- COHERENCE: a cogent, well-argued presentation;
- SCHOLARSHIP: competence in dealing with philosophical and scientific texts and interpretations.
